+-------------------------------------------------+ | The Ultimate Sega 8-bit Games (SG1000/SMS/GG) | | Emulator Compatibility and Ratings Compendium | | --- --- --- | | aka "The Sega 8-bit Chart" (S8C for short) | +-------------------------------------------------+ as of 06 February 1999 - v1.00 currently 313 games tested new entries/changes: see end of document No. 1 emulator: MEKA v0.0.3600 (305 of 313 games work OK, i.e. 97.4%) No. 2 emulator: BrSMS v1.16 (299 of 313 games work OK, i.e. 95.5%) Massage v0.90r (299 of 313 games work OK, i.e. 95.5%) No. 3 emulator: MasterGear 1.1r (257 of 313 games work OK, i.e. 82.1%) -==========================================================================- Statement of purpose: This document is intended to serve as a means whereby developers of Sega emulation software can further refine and enhance their products. It is being provided as a public service for everyone interested in Sega emulation. It is not intended to be an advertisment for illegal cart dumps, nor should it be viewed as such. The author will willingly cooperate with any and all companies and organizations who choose to use this document for their own purposes, so long as they do not abuse the established guidelines set forth under the Berne Convention concerning the duplication and distribution of copyrighted computer software. -==========================================================================- Ratings go from 0 (delete it) over 5 (mediocre) to 10 (godly) "*" means "works almost perfectly" "+" means "works with some minor bugs" "=" means "not playable due to serious bugs" "-" means "locks up, i.e. not playable" "/" means "locks up later in game" "?" means "unknown" -==========================================================================- Bench testing equipment: All games were tested on a variety of homebuilt IBM PC compatible computer systems with different components and configurations at any given time. CPUs: AMD 5x86-133, K5-100, K62-300; Cyrix 5x86-100, 6x86-80, 6x86-166; Intel Pentium 200, Pentium 200-MMX, Pentium II 350 Memory: 16 MB FP RAM (AMD and Cyrix 5x86 systems), 64 MB EDO RAM (all Pentium-type systems), 128 MB SGRAM (Pentium II system) Sound: ATech AOpen AW37D OEM, Creative Labs SoundBlaster and all its variants up to and including the Soundblaster 64 PnP, Logitech Soundman Wave, Ensoniq SC1000, Reveal SC400 series Video: Many different graphics cards with a variety of chipsets including but not limited to ATI (Rage series), Avance Logic, Cirrus Logic, Diamond (Stealth series), Trident (9xxx series), Creative (Permedia 2), and 3Dfx (Voodoo Rush/Banshee/Voodoo2) -==========================================================================- Sega Master System/Game Gear emulators tested: MEKA alpha Modified configuration - full-screen display, GUI OFF, 0.0.3600 keyboard input selected, FM sound engine OFF, Eagle DOS (MEK) engine ON, "NES Sucks" switch OFF -_^ Zoop is the chief sysop of EmuCamp and is quite proud of his baby. He has every right to be. Many options are disabled in the private alpha, and there's a small bug in the sound engine that sometimes makes the sound hang on after exiting (at very low volumes), but the game engine itself is quite solid. It also handles SG1000 games, too! BrSMS v1.16 Default configuration - 320x200 resolution, frame DOS (BrS) skip 1, emulation NORMAL, joystick A, sound ON, VSync OFF, session SINGLE, port COM1 Known affectionately as "the Brazilian emulator," it is one of only two emulators in the lineup that can currently handle SG1000 games. The v1.17 registered version, released not too long ago, is reported to be somewhat better and features an improved graphics engine. Massage v0.90r Default configuration - immediate interrupts, top line DOS (MAS) 304, VBlank optional, 311 screen lines, English console, line interrupt method 0, YM2413 ON, color approximation OFF "Ol' Reliable," as I like to call it, has worked so well for so long that it has become the standard by which all other SMS/GG emulators are measured. A new and improved version appears to be in the works, so stay tuned! MasterGear Modified configuration - frame skip 1, VBlank 302, v1.1r Win95 HBlank 215, use MIDI sound, both English and Japanese (MGR) console modes enabled, all four sound channels ON, sound rate 22000 MHz, 32 sound buffers, 2x screen. Even though it lacks digital sound support, this Win95 emulator has the respect of many in the Sega 8-bit community. Now, if only its MIDI sound option wasn't tone deaf, then it might be almost perfect. I'm told that the v1.2r release addresses many problems and improves compatability, and it is available to all registered users. -==========================================================================- No distinction is made among the various 8-bit titles unless I have unique dumps for more than one console - in these cases, each version is listed separately, with the specific console version after the game's title. This does not apply to Game Gear retoolings (i.e. reduced screen size) of Sega Master System games, nor do I make any distinction between such. This will change as soon as I get more of the newer cart dumps. -==========================================================================- Game ratings by EmuCamp - http://www.emucamp.com As you can see, the ratings for many games are not yet available. I invite all patrons of EmuCamp to submit ratings either to them or to me for the next release of this FAQ. -==========================================================================- ROM image sizes are an approximation in mbit (128K = 1 mbit) of the actual physical size of the file - not necessarily what your emulator reports -==========================================================================- >>> Please don't ask for ROM images - US 17 CFR 300 prohibits this <<< -==========================================================================- Name of Game RTG BrS MAS MGR MEK Size -A------------------------------------------------------------------------A- Action Fighter 6 * * * * 1 Aerial Assault ? (E) English (J) Japanese (M) Multilingual (P) Portuguese Footnotes 1) The 3D games are rather hard on the eyes because they were intended for play using the stereoscopic glasses that were made for the original SMS consoles. There are hacks out there to let you use them successfully with your favorite personal computer; I've also had limited success using some of those cheap red-and-blue jobs like they used to give away at the old 3D movies. 2) Space Megaforce is the name by which this game is known on the SNES. 3) I have been informed by Ricardo Bittencort that Alex Kidd - Miracle World is supposed to be a 1 mbit cart. Apparently the 2 mbit dump is the common one. 4) Championship Hockey is an 8-bit port of NHL 92, one of the games in the EA Sports NHL Hockey series. 5) Dr. Robotnik is Sega's rendition of the Japanese Tetris clone Puyo Puyo with the Sonic characters replacing the original. Puzlow Kids is the English-translated version of Puyo Puyo for Game Gear, which obviously must exist somewhere (even though I haven't yet found it). People not familiar with the colorful history of Compile's Puyo Puyo and its various spinoffs and knockoffs would not know any better. This is the reasoning behind the separate listings. 6) Unlike the Genesis game, the 8-bit Ghostbusters is an almost perfect port of Activision's excellent Commodore 64 original. 7) Last Battle is one of the names for the G/MD Hokuto no Ken game. The Hokuto no Ken games are derived from a long-running Japanese anime TV series that set new standards (or lows, depending on how you look at it) for animated violence. There was also a feature film produced, which was translated into English and released by Streamline Pictures under the title Fist of the North Star. The video is currently available under the Orion label. 8) Yes, the Lunar Game Gear game is indeed derived from the almighty Sega CD RPGs. Now, if only someone would make a translation patch.... 9) There are two well-known bugs with the common dump of Olympic Gold - Barcelona 92: the "black palette" bug and the lockup bug. These two afflict all tested emulators from time to time at random, and no one really knows why. I have listed it as working because it does - most of the time. 10) Outrun Europa is the so-called "lost" title in the OutRun series. It was the only one not made for (or ported to?) the Genesis. 11) It may surprise you to know that the MegaDrive (i.e. Genesis) version of Phantasy Star is identical to the SMS version for all practical purposes. This is because the MegaDrive cart apparently forces the console into SMS mode so it can run the Japanese Mark III SMS binary code. The Japanese version has an added bonus not present in the English port - FM-synthesized music, available through the Japanese SMS console's on-board YM2413 synthesizer chip. I'm told by those who have heard it that it makes the regular music sound rather shoddy in comparison, and I should have a copy fairly soon to see for myself. 12) There is a partial English patch available for Phantasy Star Adventure that makes the menus and a few other items somewhat readable. This is the only such patch for a Sega 8-bit RPG of which I'm aware; I'm sure many of you will correct me if others for other titles have been made. Don't bother, though, with planned or announced projects - I and my supporters only want to know about available working translation patches. 13) Power Strike is not the same game as Aleste GG, even though they share a common heritage. One look at the graphics of each makes it obvious. 14) Rozetta no Syouzou is sometimes mistranslated as Loletta no Shozu or some other such rendition. This is due to improper interpretation of Japanese phonetic values - the most common one being the swapping of the English "R" and "L" sounds. For an excellent example, refer to the entry for Gleylancer in my Genesis Game Guide. 15) Shinobi SMS is a port of Sega's original System 8 arcade game. Shinobi GG is an entirely different animal produced exclusively for Game Gear. 16) Tama's Olympics is an abbreviated form of the full title; I shortened it for convienence's sake. 17) Virtua Fighters Animation is one of the most desired cart dumps in the Sega 8-bit library. It's also one of the few known bad dumps, and that's a shame. None of my sources seem to have a good dump, so I'd welcome a copy from any readers of this FAQ. 19) The only noticeable difference between the SMS and Game Gear versions of Wonderboy (apart from the screen size) is the music. It does not sound as sophisticated in the Game Gear version. I leave it to the experts to point out other differences. 19) World Grand Prix is in fact a 1 mbit cart, but a 2 mbit dump is the more commonly encountered version. 20) This is not the same as X-Men - Mojo World, which was released in 1996, but is instead the very first X-Men game for Game Gear (1993 release). My apologies for the error in previous editions of this FAQ. 21) Zaxxon 3D is the only SMS 3D game I've come across to date that has an option for 2D mode. Perhaps the emu authors could provide an option in future releases to disable the image flipping on other games as well for those of us who don't have the SMS 3D eyegear. -==========================================================================- Created by The Scribe -> spettus@cswnet.com *!* Please mail me if you find out that a certain game doesn't work properly in later stages.
